After long years of people trying to keep criminals and animals in the cage, there comes COVID-19, a classy but harsh statement by nature to the humans that "Nature will always be superior, so just stop making efforts to be God." Millions of people died, Organizations failed, Democracy collapsed, and Millions came into the situation of Do or Die. Among all this, people started accepting techniques of work from home, study from home through online means.
I am currently pursuing B.Tech in CSE at Nirma University, Ahmedabad. Presently in 3rd year and just completed the 5th semester through online mode. So not wasting much of your time, let's cover-up this sem in a single line. "We had 24 Quizzes, 11 Assignments, 10 Vivas, 5 End Sem Exams, 3 projects, and 1 Term Paper, making a total of 54 tasks in 5.5 months, which means you get an average 3 days to complete a single task."
Quite Amazing, right! The problem is not that we passed the Sem or we went through this. But the actual problem is what did we conclude from this. The answer is pretty simple, "Nothing". It was like we were in a war of 5.5 months with 240 others, in which 15 to 20 people were doing some productive work, and the rest were just surviving till the end of the war. Quite funny! Teachers assumed we were at home the whole 24 hours, so we have got so much time to do it, and also we were with our family that makes us happy and easy to do the work. But the scenario was completely different, the lectures were from 9 to 4 with a 1-hour break in between, which means 6 hours of laptop screen time. No matter you studied or not, but you were in front of a screen for those 6 hours, which exhausted you, and made you bored. And you would not like to do that for the rest of your day. But considering the tasks, we had to sit for more and more hours, doing things and getting things done, which proportionally lead to no time to spend with family and also a decrease in the discussion and talks with friends. So lonely, right!
Considering all facts, we just tried to contact the authorities and faculties about the problem. But the result was they heard us, and in solution, they tried to convince us that this was the decision of upper authorities and we will follow it(without considering the result). This semester was not just hectic for us, but the same situation was with the facilities too, with lots of loads. But I think the main cause of this was they tried to implement online semester the same way as it used to be for offline. And fearing that students will copy, they kept on taking tests and giving assignments every other day. And in all this, they forgot to focus on understanding, knowledge delivery, and burden on students as well as faculties.
I also came to know that Departments discusses the changes or improvement that should be done, with the students that get good placements or good jobs. This makes me feel like asking Ambani whether he is happy with his home. Also, the involvement of the University in cultural and sports part is too much less, cause they feel like it's natural and not academic, etc. I do not say it's wrong, but it's like we have followed these systems for a long time, and thinking about any change is giving a spark of fear about "What if we will not be successful?". This situation proves why Fear of Change is an important topic in Organizational Behaviour. We cannot change the system too quickly, cause the bigger the tree, the deeper are the roots.
Well, this was my opinion and I always feel like everyone sees a situation from a different perspective, and each perspective has its importance. And I think management is gonna do great next Semester, forgetting the past. If you wanna share your thoughts on this or your college, the comment section is all for you, my friends.
